Materialism
When the holidays come around it is a time to have good
quality bonding time with your family and give gifts to those that deserve it. After
reading both of these short essays about materialistic spending during the holidays,
I really liked the first one better. I liked the first one better because it
reflects what I think the holidays should represent. The holidays should not be
about materialistic spending on objects because by doing so you will condition
your kids to expect gifts and ruin the true meaning of the holidays. It will
make them spoiled and start to demand pricey clothing because they think that’s
what defines them as people. It will hurt them in the long run and make them
more susceptive to being lazy or suffer from personality disorders. The
holidays should not be the cause of these such bad things but should teach us
the true meaning about life. To be grateful for what we have and to appreciate
another year with our loved ones. You may bring joy to the person by giving
them gifts but you can never replace the happiness that is caused by the presence
of your loved ones. The precious moments that you have during the holidays is
priceless. They mean way more than any gift that anybody can give me. With that
being said I will not subdue to the American way of spending. I will stick to
my morals and values that allow me to cherish the holidays as a time to make
memories with my loved ones and just enjoy the small things in life that you
just can’t put a price on.
I agree that spending more time with family is something we should do more often. The holidays is a special time to spend time with our loved ones.
ReplyDeleteI don't think giving presents are such an evil thing, people just shouldn't make buying expensive presents the main focus of the holiday season. I do agree with the last part, making memories with loved ones are what's really important.
ReplyDeleteI like your way of thinking. The Holidays should mean more to people than just presents. Yeah sometimes kids just get into the habit of wanting more flamboyant things.
ReplyDeleteThe American way of consumerism around the holidays is something that just ruins the holidays. The experience is with the family and the times you enjoy together, presents are always a plus but shouldn't be the main reason for holidays.
ReplyDeleteI believe that it is still possible to make cherished memories with loved one and still exchange gifts. Presents don't define Christmas, but they do show your appreciation for someone.
ReplyDeleteIt's true, spending time with your family is better than any present. Even though now Christmas has mainly came to gifts. It's no every day you get together with your family and holidays are the best time to do them.
ReplyDeleteRegardless whether I receive a present or not the fact of spending the day with my entire family and having laughs and a good time is all I ask for.
ReplyDeleteI also agreed to the first essay. It's a little shocking but it's also kind of true that's why I suggest you should give your future kids gifts only if they truly deserve it.
